A new and exciting treatment for arthritis is available for dogs and cats. Stem cell therapy provides an effective option for treating pets with chronic, orthopedic problems.
Current uses of stem cell therapy are arthritis and tendon and ligament injuries. It has also been used to successfully treat hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and cruciate tears, while new uses are continuing to be developed. This procedure uses your pet’s own fat to obtain adult stem cells, which are then injected into the problematic area to stimulate growth of healthy cells, spurring regeneration while strengthening damaged tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, cartilage and fractures. A single stem cell can turn into many different tissues including tendon, cartilage, or bone and then work to repair those damaged areas, making stem cells very useful for healing damaged joints.
Once a patient is deemed a candidate for treatment, the pet undergoes a short surgical procedure to harvest approximately 2 tablespoons of fat. The sample is then shipped to a company called Vet-Stem that will derive the stem cells from the fat and send those cells back to the veterinarian for injection into the pet. The treatment requires 2 appointments, one to harvest the fat from the patient, and a second to have stem cells, derived from those fat cells, injected into the area of concern (commonly the arthritic joint as well as an intravenous infusion) where they will divide and change into the type of tissue that is needed for repair. Animals begin to feel better often within a few weeks, however a rehabilitation and exercise program should be started in conjunction with the stem cell therapy.
Regenerative stem cells are an animal’s own natural healing cells and are proven to reduce pain and inflammation. If your pet suffers from an orthopedic problem and is not responding to current therapies consider stem cell therapy for long-term pain relief.
